Road & Track: Porsche 718 Cayman GTS Test Drive

Writing about Porsches can be intimidating—they are so revered. Writing a test drive of one for Road & Track magazine all the more so. R&T prides itself on being the definitive driver’s magazine, so there is a lot of pressure to get things right. This requires a high level of technical expertise and circumspection. We spent many hours debating on how to characterize the nature of each car, its pros and cons, and to make sure that we had the right “voice” for the magazine.

Besides bringing those elements to the table, I sought to infuse every story I wrote and edited with a high level of writing craft, informed not just by the best of motoring journalism, but of feature writing overall. As such, I always paid particular attention to the introductions of every story—whether I wrote it or edited it. It became a sort of running joke that I would take writers to task for boring leads and spend hours trying to construct the perfect intro. But the effort is well worth it.
